Honeybee Death Mystery Solved


I am sure many of you have heard that our honeybee population has dwindled rather rapidly over the last half a decade, leaving scientists baffled as to the reason why.

It is rather an obvious statement that we need these bees to pollinate the flowers of trees and plants, as well as to pollinate crops. If a human were to do single flower by single flower, our food production would decrease dramatically, causing massive worldwide hunger and starvation. Who would have thought that the loss of a single species could upset the delicate balance of the ecology to such a chaotic degree to the fact that the human population, as well as the animal population, would be completely threatened?

There is no way that man could ever replace the role of the bee, not even with Man’s best technology.

So, what exactly has been causing this bee genocide?

Scientists have found that the answer to this lies in both a fungus and a virus. The virus is said to be the same one reported in India 20 years ago, and is also a virus found in moths.  The fungus is called Nosema ceranae, and can cause the bees to become very ill if they eat the spores.  The virus affects the stomach/abdomen of the bees, and causes it to become a green-purple colour. The two together then cause what is known as CCD – Colony Collapse Disorder.

Scientists believe that the way this harms the bees is because the bees get sick via the one pathogen, causing them to become stressed, and this decreased immune system allows the secondary infection from the other pathogen to appear.

The interesting thing: It seems that when the bees become sickly, they do not simply die. They first fly off in every direction away from the hive, and die alone, completely spread around, and not limited to a single area.

Is this to protect the hive? An instinct of nature? And how do we now fix this?
